the button on the gear shift will not depress enoough to shift out of park.

Remove shift handle, (I believe there is a screw on the front of it). Remove console (be carefull it is fragile).
Inspect mechanisim for binding and nylon button on shifter stalk. Lube with white lithium grease. If problem persists, replace handle. or you may have to replace the shifter stalk. Parts SHOULD be available from Toyota, or go to junk yard and get parts from 90-92 Toyota Corolla or 90-92 Geo Prizm.
