1989 Toyota Corolla battery wont charge

my battery light would come on-not charging
it would stay on, then go off
positive battery cable was cracked-replaced
battery light still on????

Check the tension on the alternator belt. Then take the vehicle to an auto parts store (Autozone, CSK/O'Reilly) and have them run an electrical test. I suspect bad alternator.
