Just picked this car up. Its an fx16 hatchback. The motor was replaced a few years back. I was driving it home and it started bucking and sputtering when I hit the gas. If I just barely put my foot in it its fine. I'd shut it off for a minute and turn it back on and it'd be fine for a few more minutes. I'm going to change the fuel filter but I'm not sure where its located on this particular model and if its worth replacing. Thanks!

Is this FI car or carb? SOHC or DOHC?

If FI, DOHC:

Follow the fuel rail supply line down, the filter is usually on the firewall, and most times you have to remove carbon cannister, intake tube to see it.

Check timing belt for cracks or missing teeth, change belt at 60K.

Also measure fuel pressure with mechanical gauge.

Remove plug, attach wire, pull FP fuse and ground plug to cam cover bolt, crank engine, spark sjould be blue snapping, anything else is considered no spark.

This could be a low fuel pressure problem, caused by bad pump or clogged filter.
Also could be an ignitor going south, ignitor is in dist.
Another possibility is weak coil.

Check with autoparts stores, on many Toyota's it is actually cheaper to buy a remufactured dist. With ignitor rather than the ignitor itself.
