1978 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have a 1978 Toyota Corolla (1.2 liter, manual 5 spd) that runs wel (with foot on the accellerator)l. However, when braking for a stop the headlights dim and the car stalls. What could cause this?
