1978 Toyota Corolla 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual

I have a 78 corolla and it has a strong exhaust smell inside the car when I am driving. I smell it if I roll down the driver side window. so I keep it closed. I keep the passenger side window open so that I can drive. the smell gets worse when I let off the gas pedal every time I slow down. I looked under the car and nothing seems wrong. the heather dont work and the exhaust gasket is brand new. please any clue will be appriciated. thanks.

If there's no actual leak-check the charcoal canister could be saturated with fuel
