2000 Toyota Celica Automatic

My celica always reads that it is empty on gasoline, even though there is gas in there. Also, a little while after that happened, the speedometer rarely works properly, and when that doesn't work the odometer stops working as well.

Hi vanny76,

The fuel gauge inaccurate reading could be due to a faulty fuel sending unit in the fuel tank.

As to the speedometer and odometer malfunctioning, it most probably is due to a faulty vehicle speed sensor or its wiring circuit.

Is the Check Engine Light showing?
Did you try to retrieve for trouble codes?

the check engine light is on, but I'm not sure what you mean by the second question.

Also, I took in my car to check what was the problem with the fuel, and I think if the fuel sending unit your talking about is what floats in the fuel tank, then that wasn't what was wrong with it. Do you have any other suggestions?

When the Check Engine Light ( CEL ) is showing, an error has been detected in the engine management or emission system. You would need to retrieve the trouble code as indicated by the CEL.

Autozone provides the scanning services free. Get it checked and let me know the exact trouble code, it would anable us to understand if the speedometer not functioning is related to it.

Yes, the fuel sending unit is located in the fuel tank and since it is not the cause of the sending unit, the next thing that you should check woule be the gauge and its wiring circuit. It could be loose connections behind the meter cluster, a faulty gauge or a p[oor ground connection.
