1995 Toyota Celica Oil Leak

I was given a 1995 Celica and it is leaking oil. The leak seems to be substantial (a drop every few mins). I drove the vehicle 70 miles (with the oil full) and it was near empty when I arrived. There are no signs of oil under the hood (the engine & filter is clean). The leak appears to be directly below the engine.

However - I noticed that most of the underneath of the car seems to be covered in oil. In addition, since getting the vehicle home, I have driven a few short distances (2-3 miles) and checked the underneath immediately and no longer see any oil leaking. Not sure if the leak is blowing the oil back and the lack of a good heat is preventing the oil from dripping?

Is this a common problem for the Celica? Any thoughts on what it could be? Any thoughts on how much I am looking at to have it fixed?

It's a Celica GT - Convertible and the engine is a 2.2 Liter. Please provide any information you can.

Hello –

Okay…..oil leaks………..

First make sure you check it regularly as if it gets to low you can burn the engine up.

A little oil goes a LONG way…….and makes a big mess. You need to find the source.

First, wash the engine really good especially under it. Oil runs down obviously and with the engine fan blowing it all over and the air flow….it really goes everywhere.

So, wash it down as I said really good especially under. Now look around for anything. If all clean then start it up…………let it run for a couple of minutes and shut it off and then take a strong light and start looking. You should see fresh oil and follow it to the source.

You may have to do this several times…………

It could be the front seal, valve covers, oil sending unit…..etc………….

Sorry….didn’t answer your question………this is a 1995 with 151K on it so it is about time for the seals to go and leaks to occur……..

Once you find the exact source of the leak then we can talk possible cost……….

Any idea what the typical cost of repair is? Is one source more common than another? I am just trying to determine what I should expect to pay at the repair shop.

I can try to clean it - but it seriously seems to be covering the entire bottom of the car.

I know you can't say for sure - but in your experience - does this sound like a minor or major issue?

The car seems to run great otherwise.

Well, as I said my friend……I can tell you from a valve cover to a crank seal I guess but you may have multiple leaks and cost………..

You don’t have to clean the entire bottom……sorry if I misled you……

Only the engine part, oil pan etc………you are just trying to narrow your search…….

So let me know if you want to wash and check or a low and possible high estimate and I will try to put something together…..
