Engine Mechanical problem
1987 Toyota Celica 4 cyl Automatic 96744 miles

can I test for a bad altenater by starting the engine and removing the positive battery cable to see if my altenater is bad...if not how else can I tell without an engine tester before I purchase the part

HI there,

you should never remove the battery lead with the engine running as you run the chance of destroying the ECU with a voltage spike, you should always use a volt & amp meter to test the alternator, a mechanic will take only a few min to do this test.
