Transmission Fluid Type

My friend has a 1999 Toyota Camry.I just noticed that she put "Type F" transmission fluid in the car, when it calls for "Dextron III". She seems to think that it'll be fine.I disagree. Might this cause damage to her transmission, and if so, what should she do to avoid damage?The car was very low on fluid and she added 1 quart of type F.

Always put in the correct fluid or you may create a problem. Today's cars are engineered for certain goals, and the fluid properties can be detrimental.
Low fluid however will burn out the clutches and she may have already caused damage.
I'd flush it and get new fluid in it, it's good maintenance anyway.

Here is the fluid it should take.

Fluid Types
A/T Fluid

Type. D-II, DEXRON II or DEXRON III
Capacities
Automatic Transaxle Fluid

Drain and Refill. Up to 2.5 liters (2.6 US qts)

Fluid Type. ATF D-II or Dexron-III - Dexron II (r)

Differential Fluid

Capacity. 1.6 liters (1.7 US qts.)

Fluid Type. ATF D-II or Dexron-III - Dexron II (r)

Total dry fill combined. 7.2L (7.6 qts.)
