Power Comes and goes between RPM 1000 - 2000

Hi guys,

V6 ( 3.0L) automatic. Mileage: 127000. The car starts and idles well. However, when I drive slowly with the RPM in the range of 1000 to 2000, the engine power comes and goes even though I keep the accelerator peddle pressed at a constant. When this occurs, I can see the RPM meter needle swing up and down fractionally. Although the engine is quiet I can hear the engine power coming and going and also feel it since the car rocks forward on the power surge and slows when the power goes off again. The frequency of this is I guess, approximately two times each second.

However, when the car is stationary this does not happened even if I bring the RPM to that level. (The engine is very smooth then). And when I go over the 2000 RPM and cruise on highways the drive is smooth and there is no hint of this.

I recently did a major service where the fuel filter, air filter, gear oil, gear oil filter and the timing belt were replaced, hoping that it will solve this issue. In addition, I asked the mechanic to check why this happens. However, they appear to be stumped after doing a full check of the car’s emissions and all other things ( I’m not too familiar with what they checked exactly) and told me that the car came out clean in all the tests they did. Their final advice is to drive until something of “substance” comes that can be detected by them. This does not sound as good advice to me since it may land me in even a bigger problem later.

I would really appreciate if you could point me to what you feel needs to be done in order to solve this problem. Thanks a lot!

Hello,

What happens on these cars is the throttle actuator gets dirty and starts to act strange as the feedback data varies. Here is a guide that will help fix it.

Please run down this guide and report back.

My car is basically revving too high, for instance when I am on the freeway going 80mph the rpm stays between 4 and 5.

Is this a major transmission promblem or is it something simple i.E changing a filter or spark plug?

Is it shifting in high gear? If so then the TCC lockup is not working, if not then a shift solenoid is bad.

Do you have a check engine light?

Clean out the idle air control valve and also check the idle up solenoid-this one raises the idle when the AC clutch engages the compressor-

I just had the shift cable replaced and complete transmission flush. The RPM's are now showing higher than before. When the rpm used to read at between 1-2k, it now reads between 2-3k. Basically, the rpm seems to have jumped by 1k or so, overall. Is this normal?

Hi dean1027m,

Thank you for the donation.

Do you mean the gear shifting rpm higher?

If it is the cold start idle, then possibly there is a vacumn leak somewhere.

Yes, the rpm's go higher now, than before the repair, when changing gears.

On the highway, at higher speeds, the rpm go to just over 3k before changing gears. On side roads, the rpm now hovers around 2k, instead of 1k, like before. Also the rmp now hovers around 2k when just driving around on local roads. It used to register at around 1.5k

overall, all the rpm readings have increased by 1k in general.

Is this explainable, other than the tech messed someting up?

Shifting rpm is in relations to throttle opening so that might not be a problem but the difference in the rpm while cruising would be something of concern.

Possibly the OD is not kicking in. Does the OD OFF indicator work correctly when the OD switch is pressed?
Are the gear position indicator lights indicating correctly evey position when the gear shift is moved accordingly?

Is there any abnormal indiacgor lights showing?

Autozone provides free scanning services, get it done and see if any trouble codes are retrieved. Let me know the exact trouble code if any.

Recently my 2002 Toyota began holding back when I tried to accelerate. It would rev up to 5-6000 rpm then take off. A friend of mine who works for a parts supplier told me to check the catalytic converter in the front of the engine, he said if it was red then it was clogged. I did check it and it was red so I had the front, rear and under catalytic converters changed. I just picked up my car from Meinekee and it still has the same problem.
Now the mechanic at meinkee is telling me after he checked the computer that the readings are engine running lean, misfire on 3 and 4 cylinder.
Has anyone ever had this problem.

Are the new converters red hot? As far as the lean mixture, that could be caused by a few things such as a vacuum leak, bad O2 sensor.

Let me know.

Hello Joe,
Thank you for your response.
The new converters are normal now.
The problem I am still having is misfire when you first put it into gear/drive it feels like it holding back.
I picked up new spark plugs yesterday. So I am going to try that first.

Let me know if it helps. Also, since you were getting a lean mixture, make sure to check for vacuum leaks.

Let me know what you find.

2000 Camry CE -72K miles - Automatic Transmission - 4 cylinder.

While I stop at a traffic light and idle, I get small jerks along with the engine RPM sinking and then rising alternatively. So far, I have noticed this only during idling in Drive and once while idling with reverse gear engaged.

Any idea on what the problem could be?

Check the idle air control valve -take it out and clean it and test the throtttle position sensor voltage in closed/WOT position

I changed my engine last year and I put in a fairly used one. Since then I've been experiencing low rpm. The cars runs smoothly without the ac on, but when I do turn on the ac, I notice the car doesn't speed up much only if I rave higher.

Have the throttle body cleaned. A dirty throttle body would affect the idling and performance. Check for trouble codes.

Recently my husband changed out the spark plugs on my car. After doing so the car would not even start. He got it running but the check engine light came on and the engine was revving to about 2200 rpms at startup, the code was cylinder 4 was misfiring. We had the car repaired, it needed a new catalytic converter and gaskets, as well as the flex pipe was leaking so that was repaired. The car has been running well but still continues to rev up to 2200 at start then quickly goes to 1500 then continues to lower to about 800 while idling. The rpms seems to be running higher then they were previously when I am driving. I also seem to be using more gas then before although I am averaging 23 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. Any suggestions on what this could be?

Hi jgiesey,

The engine has a cold start feature and when engine is started, it would normally increase to 2000 rpm or more depending on the engine and ambient temperature.

Once the engine has warmed up, it would drop and at operating temperatue, the idling speed would be around 750 rpm.

What you had described is correct and I don't see anything wrong. Is the CEL still indicating?

If idling speed is higher than 750 rpm, check for vacuum leakages.
