Will not not stay running over 5500 ft. Unfortunately for me, the kids and grand kids all live in the mountains, east and west coast.

It has a minor "stumble" upon accelleration at any elevation, hot or cold, and at any speed. Going downhill, the "stumble" might be a bit worse.

It begins to surge in long slow surges, the engine becomes indiferent to throttle position, and then it dies. 10 or 20 min. later, it will start, but the throttle is completely unresponsive. Attempts to drive it result in the slow surges of power again until it dies. Going down hill after this happens doesn't change the engine performance.

After one of these spells, the transmisson, for the next hour or so, when going down a grade, begins choosing any gear it wants to, with no change to shift knob. Cruse control holds the vehicle speed, the the engine sounds like it's going to explode.

By the time I get it to the dealer, there are no codes for him to find, he says. He says I'll have to "leave it shut off and have it towed to a Toyota dealer immediately to get the codes" is the only solution.

In toyotas ECT

The TPS is your throttle pressure

The VSS is your Governor

You need to have these sensors check out-

2005 toyota camry with 66,000 miles. I was driving down the road about 70mph then noticed puishing the gass was doing nothing - car slowed down and eventually died - i coasted to the side. Turned vehicle off - turned back on and the engine rev'd VERY high then engine cut off - did this about 10 times - let sit for 15 mins then started up and ran fine but with engine light on. Next day driving to the dealer engine light went off they ran tests (so they said) and found nothing. Today dring down the road about 40 mph again i noticed pushing gas did nothing - this time car did not die but stayed at an idle level - flooring the gas pedal did nothing. Coasted to a parking lot - turned vehicle off started up and ran fine but now engine light is on again. Anyone have any ideas?

Have the computer scanned for code/s, something is going on within the engine management system that's popping the CEL

This guide will help us fix it.

Car is shutting off. I took it to Pep Boys and Pep Boys told me it is an electrical problem. What type of electrical problem could this be and how much could this type of repair cost?

Without knowing the cause of the problem, it is not possible to tell you how much it is going to cost.
Are you able to restart when engine stalled?
When does it stalls?

My car stearing shakes between 60 and 70 miles and hour. What would be the cause? Also, I have stalled out lately when I attempt to start my car. It has not been daily however, it has happened 2 times within past 7 days. What would be causing this stalling?

Hi april247,

Steering vibrations are usually caused by wheel out of balance. Getting them balaced should solve the problem, unless youhave bad tires or the rims are bent.

If the stalling only happens when slowing donw or stopped, it should be a fault with the idling system.

What is the idling speed?

Thank you for the information -

With the stalling it typically only happens when I first start my car. Is there a way to gage the idling speed before your actually driving?

If the vehicle is staling when it is first started, the cold start is not operating correctly and I would suggest getting the throttle body and Idle Air Control valve cleaned. It is the main controlling component for the idling speed.

At cold start, the idling speed should be more than 1000 rpm. The tachometer should show.

hi,
i purchased my 2003 toyota camry altise (australia) at 69000 km. at that time it's performance was very good. once i tried up to 160 k and it went up to that mark very smoothly. but recently when i try to speed up fast it takes more time than before to speed up and the engine sound increases drastically. even in normal running condition the engine sounds quite unpleasantly. what could be the possible reason?

The car more than likly need a Full tune up, meaning new spark plugs and distributor wires, an oil change, and maybe a fuel filter. If the check eng. light comes on, it has something to do with the emmission control system (ie. EGR valve or O2 censor)

I have replaced the old starter. Now the car dies when the engine is hot. It dies when the car is stopped. I can restart it, but need to give it gas to make the idle higher and keep it there. If I do not keep my foot on the gas, the car will die. I checked all of the hoses. Everything is connected and tight.

What is the problem?

Thanks,

Mike

Do you have a CEL?

Might want to clean out the idle air control valve and test throttle position sensor and airflow meter/MAF and see what happens.

I replaced the PCV valve. That did the trick.

Thanks for the advice.

Hi Ron,

Welcome to 2carpros.

The idling speed is too low causing the problem and the most common cause of low idling speed is a dirty throttle body and Idle Air Control valve restricting air flow to the manifold with closed throttle. Getting them cleaned should solve the problem as idle speed is computer controlled and non adjustable.

Hope the Check Engine Light is not indicating and you do not have other issues.

Bought a new battery and alternator tested o.k. What would be causing this? My car died on me and was told I needed a new battery. After new battery installed, car wouldn't stay started unless I gave it gas. Car dies after coming to a complete stop, I throw it in park and restart it. What would be causing this?

after replacing the battery, the memory is wiped out in the computer. it needs an idle re learn. i suggest a shop to do this for you as it may involve the use of a scan tool.

ok, you did not give us that information.

was the check engine light on?? could be a vacuum leak, mass air flow sensor, idle air control motor or the big hose from the air cleaner to the throttle body.

you need a shop to look at the history codes for the system that has the issue. take it to a shop for a real diag.
