Have a 2001 toyota camry le. While tightening a nut to the thermostat housing bolt, the bolt snapped off. I have the new bolt but cannot find in the repair manual how I remove the broken bolt and replace with the new bolt?

Is part of the bolt still sticking out enough to grab it with a pair of vise grips and back it out. If not sticking out you may have to purchase a set of extraction tools (easy out) and drill a small hole in the broken off bolt and use the extraction tool to take it out

The thermostat is located near the front of the engine on the left side. Here is a video for the four cylinder and in the diagrams below it shows the 6 cylinder engine. Also this guide will help walk you through the steps.

At the end of the lower hose, on the water pump underneath the alternator. When installing the thermostat, make sure the jiggle valve of the thermostat is facing upward where the arrow ^ of the inlet housing is pointing.

My vehicle has approx 147k miles and started to overheat, especially when stopping. A friend advised it was probably the thermostat. How do you replace the thermostat?

Hi there,

The first thing i would be checking is that the thermo fan is turning on. Go for a short drive untill the temp comes up to normal, let the car idle and as the temp starts to increase the thermo fan should cut in. if you have A/C only one fan should come on the second will activate when the A/C is turned on. If the temp get to high and the fan is not on, i would be checking the thermo switch for the fan. If the fan is turning on, then replace the thermostat. To do this leave the engine untill it is cool, remove the top radiator hose and the thermostat housing (the housing is where the hose attaches to the engine) the thermostat will have a rubber seal around the out side, this should also be replaced. If the new thermostat has a bleed hole , that is a small hole with a brass toggle this should face upper most as it will help bleed air from the system. Re fit thermostat make sure that it sits in the grove evenly , a little petroleum jelly will hold it there while you re fit the housing. Replace hose, add coolant and run up with heater tap open check coolant level when thermostat opens. drive and check for leaks.

Good luck.

Hi there,

The thermostat is located on the front of the engine on the water pump housing, it is a bit hard to locate, you should see the water pipe that is attached to the housing, i will see if i can find a good pic to post to assist with this.

You would need to drill it out with a 4 mm drill bit and then use a thread tap to get the remaining parts out and make the threads good again.

Follow the LOWER radiator hose to where it attaches to the engine. The hose is typically attached to an inlet pipe fitting behind which is a gasket and the thermostat. The gasket needs to be replaced when the thermostat is replaced.

On models with coded audio anti-theft systems, refer to Technician Safety Information for code procedures. Drain engine coolant. Remove water inlet pipe to alternator adjusting bar attaching bolts, then remove water inlet pipe and O-ring. Disconnect water temperature sensor electrical connector. Remove water inlet from water pump, then thermostat and gasket. Reverse procedure to install. Reset audio anti-theft system, if necessary, as outlined under Technician Safety Information. https://www.2carpros.com/kpages/auto_repair_manuals_alldata.htm

Position a suitable drain pan under the radiator drain cock and drain the cooling system.
On the 1MZ-FE engine, remove the air cleaner cap assembly. Be sure to label all wiring disconnected.
Disconnect the water temperature switch harness from the water inlet housing (except 5S-FE engines).
Remove the oil filter on 5S-FE engines. On the 1MZ-FE engines, remove the heater hose covering the housing.
Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet housing.
Remove the two nuts from the water inlet housing and remove the housing from the water pump studs.
Remove the thermostat and rubber O-ring gasket from the water inlet housing.

To install:

Make sure all the gasket surfaces are clean. Clean the inside of the inlet housing and the radiator hose connection with a rag.
Install the new rubber O-ring gasket onto the thermostat. On 2SE and 3S-FE engines, align the jiggle valve of the thermostat with the protrusion on the water inlet housing. On 5S-FE engines, align the jiggle valve with the upper side of the stud bolt. On 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE engines, align the jiggle valve with the stud bolt. Insert the thermostat into the housing.
Position the water inlet housing with the thermostat over the studs on the water pump and install the two nuts. Tighten the two nuts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm) on 4 cyl. engines, 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE; 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm) on 1MZ-FE engines.
Don't forget to install a new O-ring onto the water inlet pipe. Apply soapy water to the O-ring prior to installation.
Connect the lower radiator hose to the inlet housing and install the hose clamp. On the 3VZ-FE, tighten the bolt holding the water inlet hose to the alternator belt adjusting bar to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). On the 1MZ-FE engine, tighten the bolt retaining the water inlet pipe to the cylinder head to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
Attach the water temperature switch connector.
On the 1MZ-FE engines, install the heater hose removed.
Install the oil filter and check the oil level if removed. Install the air cleaner cap assembly on the 1MZ-FE engines.
Fill the cooling system with a good brand of ethylene glycol based coolant.
Start the engine and inspect for leaks.

The thermostat is under the domed housing that the bottom radiator hose connects to at the engine. It is secured with 2 10mm nuts. Make sure that the toggle valve is uppermost when replacing. also bleed system with heater tap open.
