This just started this morning but i'm hesitant to drive it because I don't know if there is something more seriously wrong with it. No vibration, or engine shut off. I did notice that the heat output was not as warm as it normally is with the vents open so I need to replace the thermostat can you help me.

Is part of the bolt still sticking out enough to grab it with a pair of vise grips and back it out. If not sticking out you may have to purchase a set of extraction tools (easy out) and drill a small hole in the broken off bolt and use the extraction tool to take it out

The thermostat is located near the front of the engine on the left side. Here is a video for the four cylinder and in the diagrams below it shows the 6 cylinder engine. Also this guide will help walk you through the steps.

Either I would think you have a thermostat stuck or you haven't got all the air out of it yet.

This guide will help

At the end of the lower hose, on the water pump underneath the alternator. When installing the thermostat, make sure the jiggle valve of the thermostat is facing upward where the arrow of the inlet housing is pointing.

My vehicle has approx 147k miles and started to overheat, especially when stopping. A friend advised it was probably the thermostat. How do you replace the thermostat?

Hi there,

The first thing I would be checking is that the thermo fan is turning on. Go for a short drive untill the temp comes up to normal, let the car idle and as the temp starts to increase the thermo fan should cut in. If you have A/C only one fan should come on the second will activate when the A/C is turned on. If the temp get to high and the fan is not on, I would be checking the thermo switch for the fan. If the fan is turning on, then replace the thermostat. To do this leave the engine untill it is cool, remove the top radiator hose and the thermostat housing (the housing is where the hose attaches to the engine) the thermostat will have a rubber seal around the out side, this should also be replaced. If the new thermostat has a bleed hole, that is a small hole with a brass toggle this should face upper most as it will help bleed air from the system. Re fit thermostat make sure that it sits in the grove evenly, a little petroleum jelly will hold it there while you re fit the housing. Replace hose, add coolant and run up with heater tap open check coolant level when thermostat opens. Drive and check for leaks.

Good luck.

Hi there,

The thermostat is located on the front of the engine on the water pump housing, it is a bit hard to locate, you should see the water pipe that is attached to the housing, I will see if I can find a good pic to post to assist with this.

You would need to drill it out with a 4 mm drill bit and then use a thread tap to get the remaining parts out and make the threads good again.

Follow the LOWER radiator hose to where it attaches to the engine. The hose is typically attached to an inlet pipe fitting behind which is a gasket and the thermostat. The gasket needs to be replaced when the thermostat is replaced.
