I was recently told by a an Auto shop that I needed the Pan Oil gasket replaced. The estimate is $300. I'm concerned that they are just trying to make a buck. Another mechanic who saw the car, pointed out a minor leak but did not feel any work was needed.

Is there anyway to tell if it needs to be fixed? If yes, what would the reasonable cost for the gasket replacement be?

Thanks

Hello and thanks for donating

First off, any leak will definitely need repaired. A leak will not fix itself, it will only get worse overtime. If it does get worse all at once and your engine loses all oil than it will lock up and you will have a much larger repair on your hands. I would suggesting having the leak fixed now. It will take a little over 2.5 labor hours to complete the job. At most shops that will average out to approx. $175 in labor fees plus cost of the new gasket. $300 does seem a bit high so you may want to take to another reputable shop to get a second estimate.
