2000 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive

My Camry lost power this morning, and merely clicks when I try to turn the starter. I had the AAA guy come out, and he told me it was the alternator. However, I had my car taken to an auto service shop earlier in the year when I needed a new water pump, and they told me that I needed to have my battery replaced before the end of the year. How can I be sure which one it is? I don't want to pay for a battery, and the real problem is the alternator - and vice versa! Are alternator's difficult or expensive to fix in Camry's? Should I replace both the battery and the alternator just to be safe?
