1998 Toyota Camry Fans/Leak

Recently, I replaced my thermostat before going on a road trip to Florida from Indiana. I made it to Gainesville, FL when I discovered a strange burning smell. I stopped at a rest park and discovered I had a water leak. My coolant overflow had dropped, but the radiator coolant was full to the brim. I'm going to have the hoses inspected, but I was wondering about the cooling fans...

My temp gauge never showed that the engine was overheating. But, is it possible for cooling fans or the fan clutch to be bad without the engine overheating? Should the radiator coolant boil?

I think your ok, just have your overflow bottle filled to where it needs to be, and yes it will bubble up and appear like its boiling. also just to be on the safe side check your engine coolant temperature sensor. because that is what tells the computer to turn the fans on. and it could be showing the computer a low temp reading causing the fans not to come on, and it also controls the temp gauge inside the car. get back to me with your findings
