My son ran our camry without oil and now it makes a 'waking' sound. Sounds like main bearings to me. How much should I expect to pay at a neighborhood shop to repair it?

Most shops will not replace main bearings, it is usually cheaper to replace engine, depending on damage to block, crankshaft.

A better alternative is to source a good used engine from a junkyard and replace it.

Main bearings will make a knocking sound, the only way to be sure is to remove oil pan and one main cap at a time and measure clearence, or remove oil pan and look for metal shavings in bottom.

You can also have cam bearing damage, oil pump damage, clogged oil galleys.
