Recently my car gas tank level was near empty. I put in nearly half a tank of gas and drove about 8-10 miles and noticed that the gas gauge was on empty. When I loosened the gas cap off, I noticed that there was a hissing sound like steam wanted to be released. I took the cap off without any steam or gas coming out of the tank.
I then filled the tank to about half full. I drove another 6-7 miles and notices that the gas gauge was indicating less than 1/4 tank again.
I stoped and checked for leaks and didnt notice any from under the car or on the engine. I then drove the car another 18 miles. The gauge went to about empty. The next day when I started to drive the car again, the gauage went UP to 1/4 tank. I drove about 25 miles and it seemed as if the correct about of gas was being used by the car.
