my car will start but when i put it in gear it sounds like the transmission is grinding and the car wont move (1990 toyota camry)

I'm a rookie at Automatic Transmissions, but first thing; check fluid. Check linkage to tranny to make sure the gear shift is actually getting the message to the tranny.
