When turning the ignition key, the engine starts but the enging continues to grind or turn over even though the car is running. This usually continues for about 5 sec. This does not happen every time I start the car but is more likely to happen when the engine is cold. About the same time this problem started the engine light started going on. This usually happens when I am driving the car and then goes out from a matter of seconds to minutes later--while the car is still moving. I have no idea if these problems are connected. I did bring it in--not to the toyota dealer--and since the problem did not happen the next morning and the engine light does not stay on they told me they could not troubleshoot. What could this be.

Would say starter gear is hanging up need to replace before flywheel damage occurs. Light on would not concern me the OBDI systems are not reliable to find faults.
