Engine Performance problem
1984 Toyota Camry 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My 84 camry runs great for about 30 to 40 minutes then loses power. I can press he gas and it barely moves although I can, by messing with the pedal, slowly get it back up to 40 or 50 miles an hour. I can also turn it off, wait about 5 minutes and works great again for about 30 to 40 minutes. I have changed cap, roter, plugs, fuel filter, wires, EFI main fuse and no difference. When its running good, shifts through all gears.

Hi Wdesan,

Thank you for the donation.

Is the Check Engine Light indicating and have you tried to retrieve for trouble codes?

Such symptoms could be due to a bad Engine Coolant Temperature senor or ignition coil.

When vehicle barely moves, is the engine revving without moving forward or it is bogging down?

The check engine light doesn't come on and the vehicle is bogging down. It isn't revving when I press the gas pedal.

There are a few items that can cause the problem without triggering the CEL.

1. O2 sensor. It is known as a lazy O2 sensor and it does not trigger the CEL because it is working but out of specs.

2. Ignition coil. It is failing and when heated up it fails to work correctly. Check the primary and secondary resistance.

3. MAF sensor. It could be dirty and not providing the correct signal. Try cleaning it and retest.
