On occasion the cab fills with exhaust fumes for periods of 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Can occur on open road where there is no vehicle ahead of me. Odor is so strong I must open windows. Happened only 3 times so far, with periods between episodes of months to 2 years. 2 of 3 episodes was at highway speed, 1 in city. What's up?

A leak in the exhaust system is most likely cause.

Raise car and inspect exhaust system for any leaks, also inspect EGR tube as you could have a leak in engine compartment getting into fresh air intake.

Have this checked ASAP, as exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide.

Also inspect body metal near exhaust system for holes or sealing material that is missing.
