1996 Toyota Avalon 6 cyl Automatic 10000 miles

A mechanic said I need to have both front axles replaced. I don't have any symptoms that I can tell. What would the symptoms normally be?

Torn CV axle boot (either inner or outer boots)
Clicking sound during turns
