We just finished a 500 mile trip driving in rain and snow from Lubbock Texas to the Houston area and got up the next morning and the Avalon will not stay running after it starts, It will not start without giving it some accelerator. The engine sounds good while accelerated but as soon as you let off it dies. Yesterday it ran like a champ.

Twice in the last few months, when my car is cold, I start the engine and it will not idle. I keep trying to start the engine. I finally hold the accelerator down at about 1500 rpms for a few seconds and the car does fine. The car will start and no further problems have occurred. I did limited research online. Comments posted indicate the problem may be the coolant sensor (ECT). I thought I would change the sensor, however, I need a diagram or some instructions on first how to locate the ECT and the how to replace it. Thank you in advance for your help.

This looks more like a fault with the IAC rather than the ECT. Try cleaning the IAC and throttle body first.

ECT is located on water outlet, top right front of engine, item # 29.

Either the tester is not compatible with your vehicle, you have a missing power suply or the ECM (or its wiring circuit) is faulty.

The car won't idle. It's turns, but won't stay running. Could it be the idle control valve, and how difficult is that to replace or clean?

Engine light was on for a couple of years, finally a sensor was replaced and 6 th gas cap as recommendated by dealer mechanics, but, nothing showed up on the
diagnostic test regarding idle shut down issue. The comment was when they
started the car, the problem did not exist? Now it is prominent more than ever?
Driving with foot on brake and gas, is only way I can keep the car moving, dangerous.

The issue is with todays technicians is they rely on a code to tell them there is a problem. That is not the case. Good old fashion diagnostics has to be done to find this.

Do you have a scan tool that can read live data from the computer?
