86 Toyota 4 Runner, 170k miles, 4cyl - I'm completely stumped

Initially replaced Timing chain, dampeners, tensioner, head gasket and related gaskets. Upon restarting engine after the repair, it was very hard to start and when it did run, it wouldn't idle. While it was running(badly), the exhaust just below the manifold awas "glowing" red. Thought I may have the timing chain a tooth off but I checked it and it is right. Adjusted valve clearance. Truck is not backfiring. I have no check engine light on. PLEASE help. I have no clue and am at my wits end. Thanks.

No chain did not break. Simply replaced at time of head gasket replacement. Going to double check the timing at the crank today.

The problem was that the crank shaft keyway had slop in it and it was torqued at the wrong side of the "slop". This in turn put the distributor gear one tooth off at the cam. Thanks for the help I did recieve!
