1998 Toyota 4Runner smoke from car while trying to shift in

Newbie driving a manual transmission. I was stalled/stuck on hill and put on parking brake to start car. Was able to get gear into first and drive car but not before white smoke came from under car. Smell was of something getting burned/too hot - maybe metallic. After 20 minutes, tried driving car and shifted into 1&2 ok, with minor issues going into first. yesterday stalled going into first about 50 times and today about 18.

Thoughts on smoke source? parking brake or clutch? any suggestions on how to figure out what it was and if I should drive the car? Thank you!

Hi there,

I would be thinking it is a burnt clutch, get a mechanic to do a stall test this is a simple way of checking the clutch.
