When in first gear, the gearshift will occasionally pop out of first gear. There is never any problem putting it back into gear, and it doesn't pop out of the higher gears. Other than that the car shifts fine, and there are no problems shifting in or out of 4WD.

Is this a sign of a major transmission problem in the near future? Thanks for your help.

well it can be 1 of 2 things. the rubber boot that covers shifter at the floor can sometimes put pressure on shifter and pop it out of gear. if not that it is the synchronizer gear in transmission. hope this helps and it is just the boot. check back and let us know
