I have a 1991 toyota 4 runner V6 5 spd Manual Transmission with 187,000 miles (original owner). The engine has just been rebuilt and the Clutch replaced at the same time and has 1200 miles on it. The truck idle's smooth and runs good on flat roads, but when trying to climb the slightest grade I lose power and lack of acceleration and notice more on steep hills a surge in the engine. I have replaced the following items that have helped my engine performance but still lose power uphill.

Replaced: Fuel Filter, Air Filter, MAF sensor, spark plugs and wires, ignition coil, EGR and PCV valves

Things I have not replaced: Fuel Pump, Cataylic Converter and Muffler, Fuel Injectors, these are all original equipment.

The fuel pressure has been tested by a local shop and the results (40psi at idle and 42psi at WOT)

I am thinking about replacing Cat Converter first before fuel pump next?

Help and/or advice needed please!

thank you,

George

Hi gkunz, Welcome to 2carpros and TY for the donation and selecting us as your auto repair site. Feel free to ask questions at anytime-

Sounds good on the CAT could be excessive backpressure in the exhaust system that's causing lack of acceleration/no power, also check the operation of the fuel pressure regulator

At WOT the pressure should rise to 8-10psi-recommend you recheck the fuel pressure to rule out a weak fuel pump

Hey rasmataz,

You are welcome for donation.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have the Cat on order, it failed the temp test that you guys suggested on your website. I also will replace the fuel pressure regulator, because I thought the same that at WOT it only went up 2psi so I hope its that and not the fuel pump so thanks for the tip. Again not sure how accurate test was by technician. I just know everything on truck is orginal and its about time to replace some of the old parts.

I will let you know the outcome.

Thanks
