In the middle of replacing the oil pump on my 2.7l engine for a dodge intrepid and the only thing in my way now is this sprocket on the crankshaft that I can't seem to figure out how to remove. Just a quick run through on how to pull it off and put it back on again would be appreciated.

Special tools are needed for the removal and installation. For removal, it's a two-piece collar that goes over the sprocket, a pipe that holds them together, and a pulling bolt. The pulling bolt pushes against the vibration damper bolt. You may be able to borrow these tools from the dealer's service department or an engine machine shop. They're numbers 8539, 5048-1, and 5048-6.

To install the sprocket you need special tools 6780-1 and 8179. That's basically a threaded bolt and nut that pushes a piece of pipe to push the sprocket on. Verify it's pushed on all the way by measuring from the front of the sprocket to the front of the crankshaft snout. It should be 1.5374" plus or minus.020". (39.05 mm plus or minus 0.50 mm).

If you have low oil pressure, replace the main and connecting rod bearings. They cause a lot more trouble than the oil pump. If there isn't any knocking yet, you may be able to save the crankshaft.
