Trying to remove timing cover to replace cam sensor, but one of the bolts won’t come off. It just keeps spinning. I think it broke. How to remove bolt?

Hi,

If it is just spinning then it is stripped or broken as you stated. The best way to get this out is to put outward pressure on the bolt so that as you spin the bolt it will come out. You can do this by using a flat head screw driving under the cover so that it puts even pressure on the head of the bolt and then start to remove it. As it comes out put a little more pressure until you can get it out.

Just make sure you pull the bolt out and make sure it is the proper length. If it is broken then you will need to drill out the rest of it and retap the hole. However, I suspect the bolt was just over tightened and stripped the threads off in which case you will just need to run a tap in the hole to make sure the threads are clean.

Let me know if you have questions about this and I can get you more detail on how to do it. Thanks.

I have the exact same problem. The one bolt (through the upper timing belt cover and?Back cover?) Just spins. Something is stripped. Help! Kenny, you more detail would be great. I'm ready to just hacksaw the cover and kinda rip it off, but I'd rather get it out. Thanks.

The reason it is spinning is because the threads are stripped or no longer grabbing. So when you spin the bolt it doesn't do anything because the threads are no longer attached to get the bolt to remove. This means you need outward pressure on the bolt to get the good threads that are left to grab and it will come out as normal. Like I said before, just slip a flat head screw driver under the cover and put pressure so that the pan is pulling out on the bolt. Unfortunately I can't find a video or more detail on how to do this. Let me know if you still have questions. Thanks
