In a video by TRQ and mentioned by others online they suggest cutting the new timing chain cover gasket when replacing the timing chain to avoid having to remove the engine mount. This is for the 2.4L Ecotec engine. The part they are cutting does not contain rubber or seal anything. I am not sure why this part is even there. Is it a common practice to cut it? Is there any reason not to cut it? See pictures.

Not an issue that you cut it. It is basically there as a support for the gasket as it's made. Once the cover is torqued in place the gasket won't move anyway.
