Timing chain

How hard is it to change the timing chain in my 2004 ford fusion or would it be easier to take it to a shop anyone know how much it coast at a shop to fix?

There was no Fusion in 2004. You have to correct the year and / or engine size so I can look up the labor times.

This is really not a do-it-yourselfer project, especially if you have an "interference" engine. The potential exists to do real damage to the engine. It is also standard procedure to replace any tensioning devices and idler pulleys. If the water pump is driven by the timing belt, your mechanic will want to replace that too, if he has your best interest at heart.

I found a Fusion for 2006. The 2.3L engine uses a timing chain, not a belt. Sorry that I didn't read that right in your post. There is no mention that this is an interference engine. An experienced mechanic is supposed to get the job done in 5.7 hours. The job is listed at the second highest skill level. To do this yourself, multiply the expected time by three or four, plus the time needed to find any special tools that might be needed. Don't even consider doing this yourself until you've obtained a copy of the manufacturer's service manual, and read through the pages of instructions with line drawings and torque specs.
