Engine backfires and the belt squeals

Starts and runs, sometimes backfires and the belt squeals often. Not entirely sure what the problem is.

Backfiring means spark when it was not called for. check all you ignition components first. That is, plugs, wires, cap and rotor. While the plugs are out, do a compression test to verify the engine is good and it will also tell if you have a timing chain issue.
