I bought this vehicle someone has put a V8 Chevrolet engine in it, (carburetor) hei ignition.
I got the paper work on the engine with the purchase, it was puchased through a dealership 2014. As a crate 350/290 truck engine I had this extreme banging noise from the front. ( Starts and runs) except for bad noise. So I remove front of the engine and timing chain cover and two of the three cam gear bolts are hanging out.
So go to remove to check threads and re-tap, I have engine at TDC, I thought!
So upon inspection I noted dot on crank is twelve o'clock but so is the cam sprocket. I thought all Chevrolet's were twelve and six o'clock. So I rotate several times and watch rockers (1) sure enough after intake closes and both are closed it approaches TDC the dots are six and twelve. Did Chevrolet make some like this? Or is something off?
It is like the cam sprocket is 180 off, but it would not run if that was the case.

No this is normal, the intake closes and the piston come up to TDC, every other time the crankshaft turns 360 degrees. The distributor points to #1 on the compression stroke.

Here is a guide that can help:

Please let us know what happens.

Cheers, Ken

I must have, mis spoke, when the 1 is TDC. The dots on crank are 12 o'clock, and cam sprocket dot is at 12 o'clock also. At no time are dots together is #1 ready to fire, when dots are together, the distributor is 180 from #1, but this thing was starting and running, I maybe over thinking this.

I think I got ya, can you send an image of what you are talking about? The crankshaft goes around twice for every one time of the camshaft.

Correct, but on the firing stroke (1), piston is TDC, the dots are 12 on the crank, 12 on the cam dot, I am beginning to think, distributor is off and that is throwing me off in my head.

I am thinking the distributor is off by a 1/4 or so, but this engine fires right up, but skeptical on how it ran. I had trouble timing it with a light plus the extremely loud banging.

The Goodwrench engines are the same there is no difference. Is the rotor pointing to #1 or #6 when the timing gear mark is at the top, should be #6.

This should be easy, but I guess I could, just start from scratch. I do not see how it ran.

I am just going to start over on this. From the beginning, pull plugs distributor, and put it were it should be, I think he has put distributor in wrong, and just satisfy myself, until I do I am going be guessing in my mind. I asked if engine only had 5,000 on it why did you open it, he said he adjusted the valves and replace gasket. I am not believing that.

Will do, , I triple checked it I even checked to see if there were 2 marks on cam sprocket. There is only one, but I did notice white paint at 12oclk, these were factory marks on 12 on block also. Will up load in a day or so
