Timing belt "teeth" are stripped, it did this when I tried to crank it. I am trying to find a diagram of some sort to show where the timing marks are and how it should be aligned when repairing. Thanks

I believe the 2.0L is an interference engine. Put the belt on and check engine compression to see if there was any damage to valves.

At what mileage will I need to replace the timing belt or is it a chain?

came across a sreaming deal on the internet. im in deperate need of a car. being offerd is a lancer with no timing belt, and a bent valve. how involved is a valve replacement? ive done a timing belt before, but never valves.

Obviouslly the valve was bent when the timing belt failed. If this be the case, your going to find more than one bent valve and possibly a broken piston. Anyway, to answer your question, to replace a valve the cylinder head has to be removed. Then, the head needs to go to a machine shop to have all the valves checked. At this time, with over 100K on the motor, the valves should be ground and the head resurfaced. I don't know what the asking price for the car is, but your going to spend a few bucks on it EVEN if you can do the work yourself. Hope this helps.

What are the timing marks for this model?

So, my timing belt snapped awhile ago and I've since disassembled much of the engine compartment in order to open up the engine. I've very recently removed the cylinder head in order to test whether or not the valves are sealing (interference engine) and saw coolant on top of the pistons. I'm curious as to what could have caused this and whether it happened as I was removing the cylinder head or if it was the most likely cause of timing belt failure in the first place.

Don't panic. This is typical when removing a cylinder head. The head is full of coolant, and there's a number of passages that pass through the head gasket. Even though you likely drained the coolant first, there's a lot hung up in those passages that doesn't drain out, that is, until you unbolt the head and shake it around.

Use rags to soak up the coolant on top of the pistons. If it seeps past the piston rings and gets into the oil, antifreeze will melt the soft outer layer of engine bearings. Change the oil before starting the reassembled engine to get the coolant out.

Thanks! I've already drained the oil previous to this and plan on refilling it as soon as I get it all put back together. I plan on taking the cylinder head to someone else to get the valves replaced but should I go to a mechanic or machine shop? I know that almost all of the valves hit the pistons heads but I don't see any cracks in the pistons from the top.

Post pic of gasket can tell if problem but go with Caradioc probably poured in from head. This engine does bend valves so likely that occurred and go with machine shop to have head done. If u plan on keeping have a complete valve job ie. seats cut and valve seals replaced.

What is the number written in the timing belt?

just a part number nothing to do with fitting the belt, it may have a arrow, if so this is for direction of rotation.
