Timing belt marks?

I just read through the removal and replacement process for this year. Nothing is mentioned about a guide. I have attached several pictures. The first ones are the directions for removal direct from Mitchel Prodemand (snap-on). You will see there is nothing mentioned. The last pictures are of the engine and nothing is indicated.

After the belt broke, and I took everything apart, I was careful to put all of the bolts, washers, etc. in clear plastic Ziploc bags, and I did not remember seeing the belt guide. I had to let it sit for a couple of weeks before I could get to putting it back together; when I started on it again, I got stuck on the timing, and a couple of people said, more as an afterthought, " do not forget to put the belt guide back on." Haynes manual shows one in a picture, but does not mention it. Now, both yourself, and the parts counter guy at the Ford dealership tell me that there is not one for my year truck. In the words of my favorite character from "O Brother, Where Art Thou," Delmar, says, " Well, I am with you fellows." I am going to start buttoning her back up, sans a belt guide. Thanks for the help.

First, that is a good idea to keep the parts removed in ziplock bags. I do it myself sometimes because there are so many things to keep track of. Then, with a sharpie, I label where each bag came from. It make it ten times faster to put things back together.

So, with that being said, I feel you are an organized person. If you do not have the part, do not remember seeing it, my manual does not show one, and the parts man at a Ford dealership said it does not exist on that year, I feel confident you have done it right.

This has been driving me crazy. LOL I think I may have figured out why your engine is different. Up until 1997, the 2.3L was used. In 1998, the 2.5 was introduced in this vehicle. Maybe you are looking at a 2.3 in the manual which is different. I believe the 2.3L did have the guide.

Please tell me how to turn the bolt on the crank shaft pully so I can loose the bolt and take the pully off? The entire engine turns when I turn the bolt. I also need to know how to get the motor in time before I place the new belt on the pulleys. TDC is what I'm looking for,but how do I determine that. I know that this is very important, so I need some real expert advice here.

You will probably need to rent a 3/4 Electric Impact Wrench to get the Crank Shaft Bolt out. You will need to put the #1 Cylinder at TDC on Compression Stroke.....

I know that TDC must on the compression stroke, but how do I determine the compression stroke?

Do you have a compression tester? If not what you can do is cover the plug hole with something, if you can your finger works great, then turn the crank pulley until you feel the air being pushed out. Look at the mark on the crank and make sure it lines up.

replaced the timing belt on my 1998 ford ranger 2.5 i don't think the oil sprocket gear is aligned exactly right. What will that cause to happen?

What kind of problems are you having other than the oil sprocket gear alignment-If its cranks and no start -double check the valve and ignition timing-

It strts and runs but has a labor knock and is sluggish

Make sure the #1 Cylinder is at TDC on Compression Stroke....

How do you align the timing mark perfect once the new belt is in place, timeing is so close the moter runs but can tell tinming is off

Have align the proper points but having trouble getting perfect timing motor run but slightly rough need to know how to get alignment right on by stretching new belt

When putting on belt start at cam then oil pump then crank NO SLACK get those big clips for papers and clip belt to each gear. Use wrecn to move gear slightly to get good belt placement. Then release tensioner. Rotate 2 turns check marks.

When doing a timing alignment, marks should be aligned with the marks on the back cover, the diamond or the triangle

I was trying to locate A 2.3L head, but could not so I bought a running engine from the wrecking yard with 123,000 miles. I am getting ready to install it and I have a new timing belt to install. I am checking the timing, (as they told me they ran the engine before I purchased it). But after turning it manually the marks are off. When I put the crank key way at 12:00 the auxiliary mark is four teeth before the diamond and the cam mark is four teeth from the arrow. Is this the correct way to time a 1996 2.3L Ford Ranger? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

I broke my timing belt in my 1996 Ford Ranger 2.3L 4 Cyl. I was wondering what the possiblilty was that i bent any valves? Thanks you

From the information i have to hand , this is a non interference type engine so you should not have any valve problems.
