Has anyone ever had a timing belt break on a 2.8L VW and not bend any valves anyone?

I don't think it's very likely. The belt would have to break during idle speed and the valves would have to stop moving instantly while none were fully open. The pistons are going to coast to a stop over many crankshaft revolutions, so any fully-open valves will be hit.

A cylinder leakage test will tell for sure if any valves are leaking.
