Sounds like that is exactly what the issue is. When you installed the distributor did you have the number 1 cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke? A lot of people get it on TDC but on the exhaust stroke so the valve is open which means the engine is 180 out.
I would suggest putting the engine on TDC of the compression stroke on number 1 and see where the distributor is pointing. It should be pointing at number one plug wire on the cap.
To put the number 1 cylinder on TDC you need to remove the spark plug and turn the engine over by hand with your thumb or someone else's thumb over the spark plug hole. When you feel your finger being pushed off the hole then you are coming up on the compression stroke. Then you need to stop at the top of the piston stroke. You can also get a compression whistle that will hook to your compression tool and it will whistle as you are turning the engine over. When it stops then you are on TDC of that cylinder.
If the distributor rotor is not pointing to number 1 plug wire on the cap then you need to remove and reinstall the distributor so that it is. Or you can do the quick fix which is move the plug wires so that number one is on that position on the cap and then install the rest in the correct firing order. Clearly you need to note this on the cap if your cap is marked number with number 1 or you will forget or the next person will not know that you did this.
