Check Engine Light on with codes P0038, and P0016?

I've replaced the water pump, all timing chains, guides, and tensioner. After getting everything put back together, I started the car and it sounds good, I got the timing correct. but if rev up the motor to 2,000-2,500 RPMs the motor will start surging. I broke the "VSC" vacuum line coming off the manifold, which I just fixed 20 minutes ago, and the motor still surges. My check engine light has come on. code P0038, P0016. The check engine light was not on before I did all the work. I was hoping the surging was because of the vacuum line, what could it be? Thank you, guys, for all the help!

Hi,

When you said trouble started around 2,000 RPMs, my first thought was a camshaft issue. Code P0016 is just that, a camshaft position sensor issue.

Since you just had everything apart, check to make sure the sensor connector is properly connected, and the wiring is not damaged. Also, disconnect it and inspect the connector for corrosion or damage.

My only concern is that the timing was off on the camshaft. If it is a tooth-off, it can cause this code. The code simply indicates the cam sensor signal doesn't correlate with the crankshaft position sensor.

The other code is related to an oxygen sensor. I suspect if we get the cam issue resolved, the O2 sensor code will go away.
