Is it bad to drive with a bad oil lifter? If so, exactly what damage could come from drive with it? Also how much does it cost to have one replaced?

Good morning.

A collapsed lifter will cause damage over time if it is not repaired.

The one needs to be identified before saying just one can be replaced. It is recommended to replace all at the same time.

The lifters are about 18 each.

The labor is 4 hours per side.

How much would a shop charge to have them all replaced? Can the push rods and rocker arms be damaged from it? I ask this because it has gotten louder.

That can only be verified when they take it apart.

It would run about $600.00 for each side and you have two sides.

$1,200.00 would be a rough estimate.

I now have another issue. My car was run with high rpm's for a week or so and now its running with very low ones to where it barely runs. Could you tell what may have happened and why?

You may damage the lifters. You should never run at high rpm at all. The engines are not made to withstand that abuse.

You need to have a shop check it for you to determine the exact failure. Then they can give you an estimate of repair.

Let me know what they say and we can continue.

I took it to a repair shop and they said it was the idle air control valve. They replaced it and now it runs perfect.

Okay, since the noise is still there, I would definitely replace the lifters. Driving it with the noise could damage the camshaft lobes.
