Hello, there is a thumping/shaking sound that comes and goes, its most noticeable at about 20mph and fades away at about 35mph. But heres the catch, it doesn't do it every time. Some days its fine and some days its not. Any ideas?

Forgot to mention, it only happens under acceleration/hard braking. It will go away immediately after I take my foot off the gas but as soon as it put my foot back on the gas it begins again

FROM PAST EXPERIENCES WITH MY JEEPS AND OTHER FOLK'S JEEPS

MINE TEND TO SORTA CHIRP WHEN THEY ARE IN THE BEGINNING STAGES OF WORN-OUT-NESS, BUT ONLY WHEN I LET UP OFF OF THE GAS. AS THEY GROW WORSE VIBRATIONS OCCUR, IF IT GETS WORSE THAN THAT, THE YOKES/ PINIONS/ SEALS/ SHAFTS MIGHT GET DAMAGED!

CHECK YOUR UNIVERSAL JOINTS!

I HAVE SOME CRUDE PICTURES OF HOW, WITH MY 1946 WILLYS JEEP AS THE DEMONSTRATOR. SEE BELOW

KEEP US POSTED!

I'VE ASKED SEVERAL OTHERS

HERE'S THE THOUGHTS

#1 FELLER- LOOSE SPARK PLUG

#2 FELLER- ROCKER ARMS

MY NEXT GUESS- BACK IN ABOUT 1983---I'M PASTING IN THAT PART OF AN ANSWER FROM THIS OLDER POST

https://www.2carpros.com/questions/1984-jeep-cj7-grinding-noise-from-front-drivetrain

PASTING

ONCE WE WERE CRAWLING AROUND AT FT. BARTLOW (SAVANNAH, GA.) AT THE TIME, AN "UN-EXCAVATED" CIVIL WAR SHORE BATTERY--SORTA ABANDONED---WE ONLY FOUND IT THROUGH OUR SUPER AIRBORNE RANGER NAVIGATIONAL SKILLS!

SEEMS THAT FT. PULASKI (THE SHOW-CASE NATIONAL MONUMENT, HEADED TOWARD THE BEACH) HAD ANCIENT MAPS OF THE AREA DISPLAYED---AND THEY SHOWED THE BATTERY ON THEM--BUT IT WAS GROWN OVER AND BURIED IN SAND---KINDA LIKE A LOST CIVILIZATION!

WE CRAWLED OVER THE "MOATS AND BARRICADES" A LOT (MEANT FOR NON JEEP PEOPLE!)AND PLAYED IN THE BATTERY FROM TIME TO TIME. USUALLY FEMALES WERE INVOLVED!

THERE WAS A DEEP DEPRESSION IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FORT (OVERGROWN AND JUST LOOKED FUNNY. SAVANNAH IS FLAT!), WE CALLED IT, "THE DEVILS BOWL"

MY BUDDY HAD A CJ7 AND HAD MORE RISK IN HIM, THAN I, SO HE WENT IN IT 1ST

WHEN HE CLIMBED OUT, I WENT (CJ5). WHEN I TRIED TO CLIMB OUT, I GOT A TERRIBLE GRINDING NOISE.I FINALLY HAD TO BACK OUT, TO GET OUT

ON THE WAY TO THE BARRACKS, MAYBE 10 MILES AWAY, I EXPERIENCED A LOT OF VIBRATION. NO GRINDING

WHEN I INVESTIGATED IT THE NEXT MORNING, I FOUND MY BOLTS THAT ANCHORED THE TRANNY TO THE SKID PLATE WERE GONE!

THE REAR OF ENGINE/ TRANNY/ AND TRANSFER CASE WERE SLIDING LEFT AND RIGHT ON THE SKID PLATE----THE GRINDING WAS MY FRONT DRIVE SHAFT (WHEN IN 4x4) HITTING SOMETHING ON THE FRAME (WHILE IT WAS TURNING) WHILE IT WAS SLID TOWARD THE PASSENGER SIDE!

WHAT A SENSELESS STORY (YOU SAY!)----ANY POSSIBILITY OF SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THIS?

OK- MORAL OF THIS PASTE

YOUR ENGINE "TORQUES" ONE DIRECTION WHEN GOING FORWARD(UNDER LOAD)-THE OTHER WHEN IN REVERSE (OR LETTING OFF THE GAS SUDDENLY OR BRAKING)

MAYBE A MOTOR/ TRANNY MOUNT IS LOOSE/ DETERIORATED

MAYBE THE ENGINE IS NOW TORQUING BEYOND THE LIMITS IT SHOULD

THIS IS ALLOWING THE PULLEYS/ BALANCER/ EVEN THE FRONT AXLE (OR IT'S PARTS) TO COME IN CONTACT WITH ANOTHER FIXED PART WHILE THEY ROTATE

HENCE

LOOK FOR FRESH SHINY PLACES WHERE IT HAS BEEN BEATING ON THE OTHER PART

WHACHA THINK?

LET'S PUT THE SPARK PLUGS AND ROCKERS ON THE BACK BURNER

WHAT YOU NEED IS SOMEONE WITH, AT LEAST, SOME EXPERIENCE TO LOOK AT THE SITUATION

A "FREE"! LOOK-SEE MIGHT BE THE FELLER BEHIND THE COUNTER AT THE AUTO PARTS STORE! (THE ONES THAT HAVE THE BIG TRUCKS OR MUSCLE CARS THAT DO THEIR OWN WORK WOULD BE THE ONES TO TALK WITH

THEY CAN SHOW YOU THE MOUNT LOCATIONS AND MIGHT EVEN SEE SOMETHING THAT YOU AND I CAN'T

SEE IF THEY WILL LOOK UNDER YOUR HOOD WHILE YOU HOLD THE BRAKE AND SHIFT FROM FORWARD TO REVERSE (THIS WILL TORQUE THE MOTOR)

IF IT SEEMS EXCESSIVE, MAYBE YOU CAN GET THEM TO POINT OUT WHERE MOVING PARTS MIGHT RUB

MANY TIMES THEY WILL CRAWL AROUND AND LOOK FOR THE RUBS (OR PROBLEMS)

TAKE A GOOD STRONG FLASHLIGHT AND MAYBE A HAND MIRROR WITH YOU (NO NEED IN THE ASKING IF THEY CAN'T SEE TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITY!)

(MY BEST-US GUESS WOULD BE AXLE RELATED, SPINNING AGAINST METAL- BUT THAT'S JUST ME DOWN HERE IN SOUTH CAROLINA!)

REPORT BACK ANY FINDINGS!

BELOW IS/ WAS MY '79 JEEP #2 (HAD IT FROM '83 TO '87), THE ONE THAT THE TRANNY ANCHOR BOLTS FELL OUT OF!

Just some extra information for you, the "thumping" is mostly felt in the center console, it feels as if something is spinning and hitting something and it intensifies when engaging four wheel drive. When its in 4x4 it goes crazy it bangs and thumps horribly. But hears something I'm confused about, I don't loose any power, I can still accelerate without a problem, it just thumps and shakes like crazy until I get it around 35mph

The guy who looked at my car, he said the problem is from my rear tires being severely "cupped" and have flat spots, which they in fact are cupped and developing flat spots.

THEY SURE DID MAKE SOME RACKET!

I RECKON I STILL WOULD NOT HAVE GUESSED THAT EVEN IF I WAS IN THE CAR BESIDE YOU!

WHAT'S YOUR PLAN NOW? NEW TIRES?

AN ALIGNMENT MIGHT KEEP IT FROM DOING IT AGAIN

KEEP US POSTED
