I have a thud noise that sounds like it is coming from the rear end when shifting from park to drive or park to reverse or from neutral to reverse or drive or when it is downshifting as well sometimes. It has been doing this for a few years and has stayed about the same possible has gotten slightly worse. What do you think it is?

check your rubber joints on driveshaft? They may be wearing causing the noise. also can give a vibration at about 55 and goes away kind of like a tire. the part is called a coupler there is one on each end.
