Several moths ago my check engine light came on. The HVAC code came up. I figured it just needed a gas cap. I never got around to getting one. Yesterday my car started revving and hesitating every few yards. If I give it a lot of gas or coast, it stops. Another code came up, throttle control sensor. Now I am not sure what to do. Can it still just need the gas cap or should I change the throttle control sensor?

Okay, thank you. I know you replaced the gas cap but there are many other possibilities. A failed purge valve is a common failure for this.

Attached is a picture of its location.

442

P0442
Item Description
Symptom/DTC P0442
Descriptor
Evap. Emission Ctrl. System - Small Leak Detected (1.0 Mm)
Probable Causes
Faulty Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor (FTPS)
Faulty or Damaged Fuel Filler Pipe
Fuel Filler Cap Damage or Missing
Fuel in Lines Due to Faulty Rollover Valve
Improperly Installed or Stuck Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV)
Leaking Canister
Leaking, Disconnected or Plugged Fuel Vapor Lines
On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery Valve (ORVR Valve) or Stuck Closed Canister Close Valve (CCV)

121 is for the throttle control. The throttle position sensor is a common failure for this code but before replacing this, check the connector. It is common for the connector to be loose or the pins may be dirty, loose or damaged.

P0121
Item Description
Symptom/DTC P0121
Descriptor
Throttle / Pedal Position Circuit Range/Performance Problem
Probable Causes
Contact Resistance in Connectors
Faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
