Thermostat location and replacement?

Hey ILOVEYOU1962,

On this engine it looks like the thermostat is in a housing connected to the lower radiator hose.

Follow the lower radiator hose and you should see a housing as in the picture attached to this message.

Removal

Disconnect battery ground cable.
Drain engine coolant from the radiator and engine.
Disconnect radiator hose from the inlet pipe.
Remove thermostat housing.
Remove thermostat (2).

Please provide step by step instructions on how to replace the thermostat on the car listed above. I don't want just general instructions on any car. I want specific instructions for my car only! I am a girl and trying to do this by myself. Thank you!

Here is the service procedure from the manual for your vehicle. Unfortunately, manuals of this age tend to leave out some pretty big steps because they are intended only for technicians who know the steps prior to getting to the point of remove the actual thermostat.

The steps that are missing from this procedure are that you need to remove the intake manifold. Not a simple task. Here is a video that shows briefly what it looks like to do this:

FYI - each attachment is labeled. The fourth one just shows where the drain plug is on the radiator.

Hello , i have a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo V6 3.2L Automatic, i am trying to replace the thermostat but i have to idea of where it could be , or and how to access it, i already tried to remove the radiator but i could get to the thermostat , it seems to be located under the intake but i am not sure , i hope that i wont have to remove manifold and disconnect gas pipes , thank you for your help.

Install the thermostat into the outlet pipe (4) making sure that the air hole is in the up position. Install thermostat housing and tighten the bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
Attach the radiator hose to the inlet pipe. Refill the engine with the proper type and amount of coolant. Connect the negative battery cable. Start engine and check for coolant leakage.

Thank you for your fast answer , however i already know all the steps that needs to be taken to change a thermostat , the thing that i was asking is where is the thermostat located on an Izusu Rodeo 2000 V6 L3.2 and do i need to take my manifold apart ?

If you follow the lower radiator hose, you would come to the housing.

I need help in replacing the thermostat. It is in a difficult place and I just want to know the step-by-step instruction and a diagram would be very helpful too. It seems to be in the engine block and I think the top of the engine block might need to be removed to get to the thermostat.

Removal

Disconnect battery ground cable. Drain engine coolant from the radiator and engine. Remove throttle body. Disconnect radiator hose from the inlet pipe. Remove thermostat housing. Remove thermostat


Install thermostat into the outlet pipe making sure that the air hole is in the up position. Install thermostat housing and tighten bolts to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.). Installation rubber hose. Replenish engine coolant. Start engine and check for coolant leakage.

Just bought this vehicle used in the summer to drive back a forth between west Texas and home. The winter set in and I decided to turn on the heater for the first time. Not warm at all. I got home and undertook the project of changing the thermostat. I get the intake off and to the thermostat. I removed the top part of the thermostat housing and see the thermostat was there, sorta! The top of the thermostat was there in the tube but from the ring down was gone. No arms and no spring. I thought nothing about it because I could see a lot of work was done to the motor (shotty at best) and I put the thermostat in and threw the old one away. I drove the vehicle after and it overheats. So I go home and take the thermostat out and look for the other half of the thermostat as best as I could just to find nothing. I put the motor back together, without the thermostat, just to see that the vehicle still overheats. I also checked the water pump, no leaks, no bad bearings. Could I have washed the thermostat into the motor?

Sounds like someone put only part of the thermostat back during a repair and they had the same issue as you.

The thermostat has to be there for proper circulation of the cooling system. when you do not have a thermostat in the system, the coolant only circulates from the lower hose to the thermostat. the rest of the block and heads get no circulation.

the result is internal engine damage from lack of circulation.

the damage was done with the incomplete thermostat installed. someone did some shoddy job on whatever repair they attempted and now it is your issue to deal with.

I would have a leak down test on each cylinder to confirm head gasket damage.
