My car will not start will not even crank over. And in the DIC it reads “start disabled due to theft deterrent”. I have already done the 3 ten minute procedure to relearn the key. I have check fuses, unhooked the battery, made sure the battery was full charge and also made sure there was a new battery in my key fob. What could be causing it?

Hi,

I have to be honest. It really needs to be scanned because it could be related to a few different things. The vehicle theft-deterrent system (VTD) signals the body control module (BCM) when there is an issue which is displayed on the DIC. Now the issue could be an open circuit (broken wire) a problem in the VTD or the BCM.

What really should be done is to have the CAN bus system scanned. CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, it is a means of connecting several different modules/computers together with only a few wires.

Here is a video that shows how it's done:

Hopefully, a can scan will indicate where the problem is located. Otherwise, it will become a guessing game.

See if you can get your hands on such a scan tool and do this.

Let me know what you find or if you have other questions. Note: If you turn the key to the run position and leave it there for approximately 10 minutes, the theft light should turn off, and then it should start. If that isn't happening, we need to see where to start.

Let me know.

Joe
