How to replace gears between the heater core and the blend door actuator accessing from the drivers' side?

The vent has no resistance to stay open to vent from defrost

This door is actually called the mode door. It is unlikely the gear on the door that has failed but we need to remove it to check. More then likely the plastic gear on the actuator is completely stripped and just allows the door to flop around.
I would remove the actuator and inspect the actuator gear and go from there.
