Hey there, I have a question my car listed above w203 has a rattling noise on the power steering reservoir. I found out that it has gone out of fluid my question is, can the power steering pump be damaged because I kind of drove from work to home with the steering stiff? I would like to know if the pump can be broken.

Hi and thanks for using 2CarPros.com.

If you ran the pump without fluid, it most certainly can be damaged. The fluid lubricates the pump's internal components. Are you getting power assist now that you refilled the pump?

Here is what is indicated for your vehicle from Alldata:

Caution: The power steering pump must not draw in air under any circumstances as the pump is destroyed by a lack of lubrication.

If it was run without fluid, it would have drawn air.

Let me know if you have other questions or need help.

Take care,
Joe
