Our check engine light came on two days ago and yesterday I tried to put gas in the car and the gas kept spitting back at me as if it were full and I know it was not. What could it be?

That sounds like a vent valve has stuck closed, If you get it scanned for the codes it will likely be an EVAP code. With the valve stuck closed the air in the tank has no place to go as you fill it with fuel, so it spits gas out the filler. It will be item G in the picture.

It is not a hard item to replace. Price is around $50.00 or so for the part. Or get a can of penetrating oil like PB Blaster, Kroil or similar, pull the vent line off of the valve and spray some into the valve. Then tap the valve a few times and it should retract.

Or possibly check with a dealer, they might be willing to deal a bit, that part was covered up to 50,000 miles I believe. Nothing to lose.

Picture is what it looks like.
