The car continues to run after switching off for a short period

After switching off my vw polo r reg, it continues to run for a short period, what could this be? Many thanks Mitch.

I ran into this once where someone hot-wired the radiator fan to run all the time rather than fix the problem the right way. When the ignition switch was turned off, the spinning fan motor acted as a generator and supplied the current needed by the Engine Computer for about three or four seconds.

What I referred to would have been a modification someone did if the radiator fan wasn't turning on when it was supposed to. The clue would be the fan runs now anytime the ignition switch is turned on. If that's the case, you'll have to find where they spliced the fan circuit to a hot circuit and undo that.
