Changing drive belt on 2.4 Ecotec engine. I cannot get tension spring to compress after new belt is on it is off by less then quarter inch. Can I use worm clamps to move the 1/4 inch?

Did you remove the tensioner stop? It has to be removed to remove and replace the belt. Do not use something that will force the tensioner beyond its normal travel. Here are the directions specific to your vehicle. The attached pictures correlate with the directions. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Drive Belt Replacement

Removal
Remove air cleaner assembly
Note: The tensioner stop is critical and must be removed prior to compressing the drive belt tensioner spring.

Remove the tensioner stop fastener (1) and (2)
Note: Make sure the EN - 48932 compressor tool is not on the generator bracket and ac compressor bracket.

Install the EN 48932 compressor (1) to the drive belt tensioner spring.

Compress the drive belt tensioner spring fully.

Reposition the idler pulley (2) to release tension off the belt.
Remove the drive belt.
Remove drive belt (3) from the vehicle

Install
With the tensioner still compressed, install and position the drive belt around the pulleys except for the middle idler pulley.

Rotate pulley (2) clockwise and install the drive belt under the middle idler pulley.

Note: Make sure the tensioner stop locator pin is in the guide hole of the bracket.
Install the tension stop (2) and fastener (1) then tighten to 89 inch pounds

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

I don't have the $300.00 to buy the compressor tool. I was looking for a cheaper way to do it. I read online that a worm clamp or u bolt could compress it as well. Thank you for your advise, this hybrid is definitely different.

Hi,

First, you are very welcome. When I read your last reply, it clicked in my head what you were referring to. I'm sorry it didn't, the first time.

Although I haven't done it that way, in theory, it should work. If I had to chose between the two things you mentioned. I think a u-bolt would work better. Don't be afraid to try. Just be careful and take your time.

If you have a chance, please let me know how it works out for you. This is a post that I feel many others will refer to when doing this. Let us know if it worked.

Take care,
Joe

I am assuming you are talking about the tensioner so I am attaching the process for this and the belt to be replaced.

Let me know if you meant a different pulley and we can get that info as well. Thanks

Sorry. I see the issue. I totally missed the hybrid part of that because All Data does not show the 2.4L having a hybrid option in 2014. We have to go to a 2015 where they have the eAssist option. So we can use the 2015 if this is the same system that you have. Is this vehicle in North America? If so, then this is the same.

Also, can you get a picture of the pulley you are trying to remove so that we can be sure to get you the correct info? Thanks
